Update to Safe Snack Guide: March 21, 2013

-

Please note that we have removed a number of items from the Guide due to manufacturing and ingredient concerns. We have also added a number of products as well as expanded our Easter product section for your convenience.

Concerns

We have removed two items from the Guide due to manufacturing/labeling/disclosure changes:

  • Health Valley Organic Multigrain Toaster Tarts
  • Health Valley Organic Multigrain Cereal Bars

We have also removed the following item because it contains shea oil as an ingredient:

  • Hershey’s Hugs

Though shea oil is considered a “highly refined” nut oil and as such is not required to be disclosed as a nut ingredient under FALCPA regulations, we are removing this product because it does not meet our criteria for inclusion in the Guide.

We strongly urge you to discard your current copy of the Guide and download the latest revision by clicking the link below.

Additions

We have added a number of products from Wrigley’s Starburst, Skittles and Life Savers families and have added 7 commonly available products to the Easter Section.

  1. What about Jelly Belly (pre-packaged)? Package says “made in a peanut free facility” I wouldn’t trust buying unpackaged.

  2. I may have answered my own question. It appears they are not tree nut free even though the package contains no ingredients and no warnings.

    • You’re right, Sandra – Jelly Belly’s factory also processes tree nuts as is evidenced by the warning on their website:

What medical restrictions should I be aware of?
People with severe food allergies to tree nuts, sugar and corn may want to avoid the floor tour, as there may be airborne tree nut, sugar and cornstarch particulates. Please be aware that this plant processes tree nuts. […]

  3. I’m confused about Peeps. Your list states the 5pk. is safe, but there are many other sizes. I looked at the Just Born website and they state they list any major allergens (ex. peanuts), so why only the 5pk. on your list?
Also, I was going to purchase a Cadbury Milk Chocolate bunny but since it didn’t list which size was safe, I was worried I might choose the wrong size. There was only one on the shelf to choose from, so I’m guessing it’s the only ‘Cadbury Milk Chocolate Bunny’ sold?
So confusing. Thanks for your list and all you do to help us stay safe and informed!

    • Jackie, in light of the Just Born labeling guidelines, we were able to verify the Peeps 5-pack label so it is on the list. We were not able to verify the other varieties. This doesn’t mean that they aren’t safe as well… we simply didn’t have access to them to verify them. Our understanding is that some varieties of Peeps may be packaged outside of their manufacturing facilities so we don’t want to take chances.
As for the Cadbury Bunny, we only know of one size but we have confidence in their labeling regime as they fall under the Hershey’s umbrella.

  4. Just checked the Cadbury site and the Milk Chocalate Bunny “may contain nuts”. They have a filter that lets you choose their nut free products and the Crème egg is listed, but not the Bunny. However, since they aren’t based in the U.S. and the bunny pictured looks different than the one I found in the store, perhaps ours in the U.S. are safe?
