Alec Baldwin — best known as the star of the TV series “30 Rock” and many films — had a scare today when his 18-month-old son Eduardo suffered a serious allergic reaction and was rushed to the hospital.
Baldwin’s wife Hilaria took to Instagram to notify their fans of the ordeal:
Never a dull moment for us…Edu had a very bad allergic reaction today and I had to give him an epi pen. I’ve never had to administer it on my own…it was a scary experience. He is ok now and home, but I share with you to remind you that this is a lifesaving tool you may be able to keep around the house. He was in such distress and I believe it may have saved him today. If your doctor thinks you should keep one at home, make sure you know how to use it in advance, because these reactions can come on so strongly and quickly. I won’t bore you with the long story of rushing him out the door…just leave you with our experience, in case it helps, and our deep gratitude to to west end pediatrics, the mount sinai ambulance, and Lennox hill emergency. Fortunately, when I took this photo, he was back to himself and kicking the phone out of my hand🤣…I, on the other hand, was a spent wreck 🥴. Love you all and be safe.
Anaphylaxis is a serious life-threatening reaction to a food, drug, insect venom, or substance such as latex. It triggers the immune system to release a flood of chemicals that can cause shock where blood pressure plummets suddenly and the airways narrow, blocking breathing.
The only drug that can halt and reverse the progression of anaphylaxis is epinephrine, which should be administered promptly when anaphylaxis is first suspected.
In Eduardo’s case, his mom acted quickly by injecting him with his epinephrine auto-injector and rushing him to the emergency room. The earlier epinephrine is administered in an anaphylactic emergency, the better the outcome.
Alec Baldwin, who is 63, has been married to Hilaria for 10 years and they have six children together. He also has a daughter, Ireland, from a previous marriage to actress Kim Basinger.
We are happy for the Baldwin family and relieved Eduardo is OK. As Hilaria states in her Instagram post, her quick action may have saved the day for him.
That said, we need to augment her advice for individuals with allergies that have been prescribed epinephrine: Take 2 epinephrine auto-injectors along everywhere, every time. Be sure to administer the drug when anaphylaxis is first suspected, then call 911.
