Court Hears Teen Allegedly Threatened to Use Egg Allergy Against Care Worker

-

A teenage girl has appeared in court accused of threatening a staff member at a children’s home in Derry by saying she would pour raw eggs down the woman’s throat after referencing the worker’s egg allergy. The incident allegedly occurred during a period of tension at the facility, where the youth was residing under care.

During the hearing, prosecutors described the threat and its impact on the staff member. A police officer told the court that the defendant allegedly said she would “pour raw eggs down her throat,” a comment that referenced the worker’s known allergy. The court heard that the threat left the staff member deeply shaken.

The prosecution argued against bail, citing concerns about the defendant’s behavior and the seriousness of the allegation. The court was told that the staff member feared for her safety following the incident, particularly given the nature of the threat made against her while she was working in the residential facility.

In response, the defense solicitor argued that the teenager’s comments were “empty threats” made in frustration during a difficult period while living in residential care. The defense said there was no actual attempt to carry out the threat and suggested the remarks were made in the heat of the moment.

The presiding judge expressed concern about the allegation, noting the importance of protecting staff working in residential care environments. The court heard that threats against workers providing care to vulnerable young people are taken seriously.

Despite the defense’s application for release, the judge decided to remand the teenager in custody while the case proceeds. The case was adjourned for several weeks to allow further preparation and the submission of a file to the Public Prosecution Service.

This case highlights how serious food allergies can be — and how they can be exploited as a form of intimidation. For individuals with severe allergies, exposure to even small amounts of a trigger food can lead to a dangerous reaction. While this incident involved a verbal threat rather than an actual exposure, it underscores the importance of recognizing food allergies as legitimate medical conditions that must be taken seriously in workplaces, schools, and care environments. It also serves as a reminder that awareness and clear safety protocols are essential to protecting people with life-threatening allergies.
