We recommend a free booklet available for download from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) entitled “The Food Allergy Book: What School Employees Need to Know”.
Though the booklet is intended for distribution to schools, it provides a terrific primer for parents as well to help them understand the precautions that should be in place to protect their children with food allergies.
The booklet starts with a description of food allergy and anaphylaxis, detailing the symptoms and the need for prompt administration of epinephrine. It then goes on to describe the roles that each school employee plays in keeping students safe, from the principal to the custodian.
You can download the booklet by clicking here. We recommend you read it through, then share it with your child’s school administration, school nurse, teachers, and others that care for your child outside of school, such as with your child’s camp counselors, youth sports league coaches and after school care employees.
