Faiq Jefri Bolkiah, nephew of the Sultan of Brunei and captain of that country’s national soccer team, was rushed to the hospital in Manilla last week after consuming a meal that contained peanuts.
“It was in the curry. His lips got swollen and his throat felt tight. I brought him to the Manila Doctor’s Hospital myself accompanied by one of the staff,” said Faisal Hashim, a member of the team’s medical staff.
Bolkiah was in the Philipines to compete in the 30th Southeast Asian Games. He is the son of Brunei’s Prince Jefri Bolkiah.
“I went to the hospital, got some medicine, and feel a lot better,” Bolkiah said.
Hashim said Bolkiah’s allergy to peanuts was clearly communicated to the organizers of the tournament in advance.
According to Hashim, Bolkiah has fully recovered, but he requested that the ingredients in every meal be listed in order to prevent a repeat of the incident.
“Of course as head coach, I’m a bit upset about it because we prepared, he’s fit to play but suddenly, these issues came and it disrupted our plans,” said Aminuddin Jumat.
Team Brunei was eliminated from the finals which will take place on December 10.
