Following the anaphylactic death of Dominique Brown, social media influencer and co-founder of @BlackGirlDisney, a petition is being circulated on Change.org calling for significant changes in the way restaurants and event venues safeguard their patrons with food allergies.
Marcus Medley, originator of the petition, describes the need for change this way:
Imagine enjoying a meal with loved ones, never expecting it could be your last. Now imagine that tragedy striking—not because of carelessness on your part, but because of the alleged negligence by those entrusted to prepare your food safely.
On December 5th, 2024, our beloved Dominique “Domo” Brown tragically lost her life, allegedly due to a severe allergic reaction at an event + food establishment in Los Angeles. Allegedly, despite informing staff of her life-threatening allergy, she was served a dish containing the allergen. Allegedly, the establishment lacked critical life-saving tools like epinephrine autoinjectors (EpiPens) and trained staff to respond effectively.
Domo’s death was preventable. Her story is not unique, and it’s time for change.
The petition goes on to call for specific changes that we at SnackSafely.com have been advocating for years:
- Mandatory epinephrine autoinjectors at all establishments that serve food, including restaurants and event venues.
- Staff training on recognizing and treating allergic reactions.
- Real-time ingredient transparency, including clear communication protocols between chefs, servers, and patrons to ensure all ingredients in a dish are disclosed, particularly when recipes or preparation methods change.
With the recent spate of food allergy deaths caused mainly by reactions from food prepared and served outside the home, now is the time to take action and show your support.
