Thousands of M&M’s products have been pulled from shelves across 20 states following a significant recall alert. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that the popular candies are being recalled due to undeclared allergens, specifically milk, soy, and peanuts. These undeclared ingredients pose a serious health risk to consumers with sensitivities or allergies to these substances.
The recall was originally initiated by Beacon Promotions Inc. on January 26, but the situation escalated this week. On February 4, the FDA updated the recall to a “Class II risk classification.” This designation is reserved for a “health hazard circumstance where there is a chance of adverse health consequences from using a food product,” signaling heightened concern for public safety and the potential for medical complications.
The scope of the recall is extensive, involving 5,788 repackaged M&M candy products identified by two specific item numbers: BB458BG and BB471BG. These items were distributed with various lot codes and “best-by” dates extending as far as September 2026, meaning the products could remain in consumer pantries for a significant amount of time if not identified.
What makes this recall particularly complex is the variety of branding on the packaging. While some were labeled “Make Your Mark,” many others featured promotional branding for corporations and organizations. These include high-profile names such as Subaru, Adobe, Xfinity, Dropbox DocSend, and Morgan Stanley, as well as several universities and insurance companies that distributed them as “Candy Treats” or gifts.
Geographically, the affected products reached a wide swath of the United States. The FDA reports that the candies were shipped to 20 states: Alabama, Arizona, California, Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin. This broad distribution has prompted a nationwide alert to ensure all recipients are reached.
Consumers are being urged to check their items for specific lot numbers to determine if they are at risk:
Item Number BB458BG (Repackaged “Candy Treats”):
- Lot Numbers: 241103000, 241029000, 241101000, 241106000, 241107000, 241113000, 241114000, 241119000, 241120000, 241121000, 241203000, 241204000, 241205000, 241210000, 241211000, 241212000, 241217000, 241218000, 241219000.
Item Number BB471BG (Labeled as “Make Your Mark”):
- Lot Numbers: 241112000, 241114000, 241115000, 241119000, 241120000, 241121000, 241122000, 241203000, 241204000, 241210000, 241211000, 241212000, 241217000, 241218000.
The incident is a stark reminder of the risks posed by repackaged food and the importance of accurate labeling. Given the risk of “adverse health consequences” for those with allergies, the FDA and Beacon Promotions Inc are working to identify and remove all affected units from circulation. Anyone in possession of the recalled candy is advised to dispose of it immediately or return it to the place of purchase.
