Federal School Epinephrine Act Stalled in Committee – Show Your Support!

-

Despite 92 co-sponsors in the House and 38 in the Senate, the School Access to Emergency Epinephrine Act – introduced in 2001 by Senator Dick Durban (D-TN) and Representative David Roe (R-TN) – has stalled in committee.

Notwithstanding the epic failure of our federal legislature, a number of states have taken up the challenge and are introducing legislation that would allow their schools to stock emergency doses of epinephrine to be administered by staff when a child is suffering an apparent anaphylactic reaction. The federal legislation would provide incentives to states to pass such laws as well as adopt the necessary good samaritan legislation to shield school employees from liability.

Reports of school-aged children dying of anaphylactic reactions are on the rise; now is the time to act! We urge you to get involved by calling your federal and state representatives to demand they support school epinephrine legislation. We invite you to post follow-up comments to this article to provide the status of legislation in your state and the contact information of representatives that are key to passing it.

  1. I urge you to start a petition on http://www.change.org. You could use much of you blog post for the content – it would be so easy! That would get the attention of lawmakers pretty quickly. I would be happy to do it if you don’t have the time. I would just need permission to use excerpts of your post…. Thanks for drawing attention to this!

  2. I would really want to start a petition in my area but think I would need your help. Please respond if you can help me.
    Thanks,

  3. Where could I go to find out what legislation might be in the works in my state? I live in Arkansas.
