Eli Manning Honors Oakley Debbs with Food Allergy Awareness Campaign

-

Former New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning continues his advocacy for food allergy awareness, using his platform to honor the memory of a young fan. Each year, Manning promotes International Red Sneakers Day, a global campaign that educates the public about the dangers of severe food allergies and anaphylaxis. His involvement underscores the importance of preparedness and awareness for a condition that affects millions of families worldwide.

The campaign honors Oakley Debbs, an energetic 11-year-old New York Giants fan who tragically died following a severe allergic reaction. During a Thanksgiving family vacation in Maine in 2016, Oakley accidentally consumed cake containing tree nuts. The exposure triggered anaphylactic shock, seizures, and cardiac arrest. Despite medical intervention, he did not survive.

In the wake of the tragedy, Oakley’s parents, Merrill and Robert Debbs, founded Red Sneakers for Oakley, an organization dedicated to food allergy education, advocacy, and awareness. The organization’s name pays tribute to Oakley’s favorite footwear, transforming a symbol of his vibrant personality into a message of safety and education.

Manning recently shared a heartfelt video on Instagram supporting the campaign. “Hey everyone, today is International Red Sneakers Day, which honors Oakley Debbs, a young quarterback and soccer player who tragically passed away at the age of 11 from a nut allergy,” Manning said in the video message. He encouraged followers to recognize the day and help spread awareness about the seriousness of food allergies and anaphylaxis.

The former Giants quarterback also emphasized the movement’s collective mission. “Oakley loved his red sneakers. In his memory, and to raise global awareness for food allergies, I’m asking you to join me,” Manning added. His message encourages supporters to wear red sneakers and share awareness online to help educate others about potentially life-threatening allergic reactions.

Food allergies and anaphylaxis have increasingly drawn public attention in recent years, including among high-profile athletes and celebrities. NFL star Patrick Mahomes and his wife, Brittany Mahomes, previously shared that their young son experienced a severe allergic reaction to peanuts requiring emergency medical care, highlighting how quickly these emergencies can escalate. Through International Red Sneakers Day and his continued advocacy, Manning is helping ensure Oakley Debbs’ legacy lives on through increased awareness and education. By encouraging communities to recognize the signs of anaphylaxis and take food allergies seriously, the former quarterback continues using his platform to support a potentially life-saving cause.
