Coast Guard Launches Emergency Medevac After Crewman Suffers Severe Allergic Reaction

-

A late-night medical emergency on Lake Huron prompted a dramatic helicopter rescue, highlighting the critical importance of quick thinking and emergency preparedness on the high seas. A crew member aboard a massive commercial shipping vessel was successfully evacuated after suffering a severe medical crisis.

The incident began late Sunday night, June 21, when Coast Guard Air Station Detroit received an urgent distress call at 10:21PM A 33-year-old male crew member aboard the Walter J McCarthy Jr—a thousand-foot bulk cargo carrier navigating the waters near Harrisville, Michigan—was reportedly experiencing sudden and severe shortness of breath accompanied by a dangerously elevated heart rate.

Recognizing the life-threatening progression of the symptoms, the ship’s crew suspected the man was suffering a severe allergic reaction. Acting quickly, they administered an onboard epinephrine auto-injector to counteract the symptoms. Recognizing that he required immediate hospitalization, the ship’s command reached out to federal authorities for emergency extraction.

“The crew members of the motor vessel were trying their best to just keep him stable, but they figured it was best to call it in and have us assist to take him to a higher level of care,” said US Coast Guard Lt Cristina Silva, recounting the tense timeline of the midnight rescue.

In response to the call, a Coast Guard helicopter crew and a rescue swimmer were dispatched to intercept the vessel under the cover of darkness. By 12:45AM on Monday, June 22, the helicopter arrived at the ship’s location on Lake Huron. The rescue swimmer was lowered onto the deck of the moving freighter, secured the ailing mariner, and successfully hoisted him into the aircraft.

Following a quick evaluation check in mid-air, the patient was deemed stable enough for transit. The helicopter flew the man to the Huron County Memorial Airport, where he was immediately transferred to waiting emergency medical personnel and rushed to a local hospital. Officials later confirmed that the mariner remained in stable condition following treatment.

The operation drew high praise from military officials for the seamless coordination between the commercial mariners and the rescue team. “Thank you to the crew of the Walter J McCarthy Jr for their efforts in keeping their fellow mariner safe until we could transport the man to a higher level of care,” said Air Station Detroit Pilot Lt Rachel McGhee. “The aircrew did a phenomenal job in coordinating with all personnel involved.”

We are grateful that the man survived and thank his crew and the US Coast Guard for saving him by acting quickly and decisively.

This is a reminder of the importance of carrying your epinephrine and of training family, friends, and co-workers on how to administer it in an anaphylactic emergency. The drug and those around you are your lifeline should the unthinkable happen.
