Disney World Changes Tree Nut Allergy Policy: What Families Need to Know

-

Walt Disney World has updated its food allergy guidance regarding tree nuts across its resort dining locations, aligning its culinary standards with current Food and Drug Administration (FDA) allergen classifications. The policy adjustment modifies how the resort identifies and labels menu items designed for guests managing dietary restrictions.

Under the updated FDA framework, several nuts and botanicals are no longer classified as major tree nut allergens. The ingredients removed from the primary classification include coconut, kola (cola nut), beechnut, butternut, chestnut, chinquapin, ginkgo nut, hickory nut, palm nut, pili nut, and sheanut (shea).

Because of this reclassification, Disney-owned and -operated food and beverage locations may now include these ingredients in dishes designated as allergy-friendly options. Menu items prepared for guests avoiding tree nuts will no longer automatically exclude items made with components such as coconut or chestnuts.

This policy shift means that park visitors with specific sensitivities or clinical allergies to any of the newly declassified ingredients must exercise heightened vigilance. Diners can no longer rely on a blanket “tree nut-safe” label to filter out ingredients like coconut and must examine dish formulations individually.

Walt Disney World’s digital ordering systems and physical restaurant menus continue to categorize food around the Top 9 major allergens: wheat, milk, egg, soy, fish, shellfish, peanut, tree nut, and sesame. Guests visiting table-service and quick-service venues can still access dedicated allergy menus corresponding to these standard groupings.

To navigate potential concerns, Disney encourages diners with dietary restrictions to communicate directly with restaurant staff before placing an order, noting that visitors may ask to consult with a Special Diets-Trained Cast Member for detailed preparation information. Disney also highlights the inherent realities of resort kitchens, stating:

While we take steps to prevent cross-contact, we cannot guarantee that any item is completely free of allergens. Our allergy-friendly recipes may use highly refined oils, such as soybean oil and/or ingredients that are processed in facilities that also process allergens. It is ultimately at Guests’ discretion to make an informed choice based upon their individual dietary needs.

Guests preparing for upcoming vacations are advised to review dining listings on the official Walt Disney World website and the My Disney Experience mobile app for updated dietary guidance and ingredient breakdowns before visiting theme park and resort restaurants.
