Breakthroughs on the Horizon: FAF Funds Five New Studies Targeting Food Allergies

The Food Allergy Fund (FAF) has announced funding for five innovative research studies exploring new ways to predict, treat, prevent, and ultimately cure food allergies. The organization described the awards as a “major new investment in the future of food allergy research,” supporting projects that investigate the biological processes behind allergic disease from several different scientific angles.

The newly funded work spans artificial intelligence, immune biology, precision nutrition, and microbiome-based therapies. According to FAF, the projects demonstrate “the breadth of scientific approaches needed to transform the field” while moving researchers closer to understanding food allergy at its roots and developing breakthroughs urgently needed by families.

At the Technion–Israel Institute of Technology, Dr Yonatan “Yoni” Savir is developing a multimodal artificial intelligence platform designed to improve predictions about food allergy outcomes. The system combines genetic information, immune markers, medical history, and other patient data that are typically evaluated separately. Early findings suggest the platform may eventually help predict the results of an oral food challenge months before it is performed.

Dr Susan Lynch of the University of California, San Francisco, is investigating how diet and the gut microbiome shape immune responses to allergens. Her team is working to identify dietary ingredients that reduce immune responsiveness, potentially opening the door to precision nutrition strategies tailored to the unique microbial communities living in each patient’s digestive tract.

At Tel Aviv University, Dr Ariel Munitz is targeting an immune pathway associated with food allergy, anaphylaxis, and eosinophilic esophagitis, commonly known as EoE. When the intestinal barrier is damaged, cells can release an immune alarm signal called thymic stromal lymphopoietin, or TSLP. Munitz identified the protein NLRP1 as a molecular switch that activates this signal, and his laboratory is now investigating ways to block the pathway at its source.

Another project brings together Dr Chrysothemis Brown of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Dr Carlotta Ronda of the Innovative Genomics Institute. Brown previously discovered immune cells called Thetis cells, which help teach the developing immune system not to overreact to food. The researchers are now engineering beneficial gut bacteria to deliver tolerance-promoting signals directly to these cells, with the goal of creating microbiome-based treatments that work with the body’s natural immune development.

Finally, Dr Alexander Marson of UCSF and Dr Michael Fischbach of Stanford University are building what FAF describes as the first comprehensive atlas connecting fragments of food proteins with the specific T cells that recognize them. By mapping these interactions, the researchers hope to learn how regulatory T cells might be reprogrammed to suppress allergic reactions. FAF says 100% of public donations to the organization support research, allowing contributions from its community to fund early-stage projects aimed at producing the next generation of food allergy breakthroughs.
