CoFAR Launches Platform to Accelerate Food Allergy Research

-

The Consortium for Food Allergy Research (CoFAR) has officially launched FoodSpace, a secure online collaboration platform designed to help food allergy researchers share studies, protocols, and scientific resources more efficiently. Developed with support from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the initiative aims to address a long-standing challenge in allergy research: valuable data and study materials are often scattered across separate institutions and systems, making large-scale comparisons and reanalysis difficult.

By bringing research protocols, study materials, and data into a centralized digital environment, FoodSpace is intended to accelerate the development of improved diagnostics, prevention strategies, and treatments for food allergies. The launch comes at a critical time, as food allergies continue to affect millions of Americans, including an estimated 8% of children and 11% of adults in the United States.

The platform was developed through collaboration between researchers at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and Northwestern University. According to CoFAR, FoodSpace was specifically designed to ensure scientific outputs remain accessible and reusable for future studies rather than remaining isolated within individual research projects.

At launch, the platform includes two primary components: a Study Directory and a Resource Library. The Study Directory provides structured information about food allergy study designs, methodologies, and participant populations. The Resource Library contains reusable research materials such as clinical protocols, survey instruments, consent forms, and data-collection tools that investigators can adapt for future work.

Ruchi Gupta, MD, MPH, Principal Investigator for the CoFAR Clinical Research Center at Northwestern University, emphasized the importance of improving collaboration across institutions. “By breaking down geographic and institutional barriers, we can finally answer critical, large-scale questions regarding food allergy development, progression, and severity,” Gupta stated.

CoFAR also plans to expand FoodSpace in future phases. Planned additions include a searchable catalog of global food allergy datasets, tools to support cross-study comparisons, and a secure research space featuring integrated analytics tools designed to improve reproducibility and collaboration.

“With funding from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, CoFAR’s FoodSpace is poised to support researchers across the globe as they develop novel diagnostics and treatments to improve patient care,” said Robert Wood, MD, Principal Investigator of the CoFAR Leadership Center at Johns Hopkins University.

CoFAR is encouraging food allergy researchers worldwide to explore the platform, access available resources, and contribute additional study materials to help expand the growing collaborative network.
